More than 100 ISVs Announce Support for Microsoft Windows for Pen Computing

June 24, 1991 — Microsoft Corp. Monday announced that more than 100 independent software vendors (ISVs) have committed to produce applications that take advantage of specific pen features in Microsoft Windows graphical environment for Pen Computing.

Windows for Pens, a set of extensions to the Microsoft Windows environment, is a graphical operating environment designed for the new generation of pen computers. It is expected to ship by year end. ”Broad industry support is fundamental to the success of the emerging pen computing industry,” said Jeff Raikes, vice president of office systems at Microsoft. ”Windows for Pens has achieved such broad support, first through commitments from 21 OEMs, and now with this incredible showing of ISV support. We are especially pleased to see the breadth of markets and software categories represented.”

Windows for Pens application developers are choosing a variety of methods to fully exploit the pen — from adding enhancements such as annotation to existing Windows environment-based applications to creating new pen-centric applications. In addition to pointing, tapping, and dragging, users can even use gestures to issue commands and enter handwritten text with the more than 1,200 existing unmodified Windows-based applications available today.

Leading Software Vendors and Pen-based Startups to Offer a Variety of General Business Applications

All Windows ISVs listed below have announced plans to support Windows for Pens by adding enhancements such as handwriting edit controls, scribble fields, or shape recognizers, to existing and/or planned products to explicitly take advantage of the pen.
