Fujitsu Personal Systems’ Stylistic 500 Increases Police Efficiency in the Fight Against Crime

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — February 26, 1996 — Fujitsu Personal Systems is changing the way law enforcement officials in Mesa, Ariz. report arrests, incidents and citations.

Thanks to technological advances in mobile computer technology developed by Fujitsu and its partners, the Mesa police department is collecting and disseminating time-sensitive information more expediently, dramatically reducing the paperwork traditionally associated with law enforcement.

PSI International, an information systems and services company specializing in public safety solutions, is integrating its Law Enforcement Mobile Information System (LEMIS) software into the Fujitsu Stylistic 500 — a 2.6-pound handheld true PC — to provide fast and easy capture of all relevant data necessary for field reporting. In addition to report writing, LEMIS includes databases on state penal codes, local ordinances, standard operating procedures and other reference tools, eliminating the need for officers to refer to bulky manuals or other materials in completing an incident report.

Previously, when writing a report or issuing a citation, officers would take notes at the scene of the incident, then write and submit a full report at the police station for input into its central records database. Now, with the use of lightweight, easy-to-use Stylistic 500 tablet computers, coupled with Windows compatibility, officers simply "point and click" to enter 90 percent of all pertinent information, such as witness and victim information, as well as to-scale illustrations of crime and accident scenes, all of which is admissible in the court system. Additional text is entered via a detachable keyboard.

"The Stylistic 500's standard, Windows-based architecture, powerful 486-class processor and high-end PC functionality have allowed the development and implementation of sophisticated mobile computing applications for law enforcement," said Lou Panetta, Fujitsu's executive vice president. "The benefits of these applications are clear, from reducing burdensome paperwork for beat officers to eliminating record-entry backlog and mistakes in the data entry process."

Mesa officers dock the Stylistic 500 to their substation's local area network (LAN) via a network adapter to upload information to the host. Once uploaded, the information is immediately available to investigators, victims and insurance agencies. Time-sensitive information can be downloaded to the Stylistic 500s for updates or alerts.

"We were looking for a mobile computer that offered the power and features of a desktop system, yet was compact enough to be mounted in a patrol car — no small task, indeed," said Martha Hill, PSI's director of sales and marketing. "The Stylistic 500 not only met our processing speed and form factor requirements, but also offered extensive battery life and a generously sized screen, both of which are essential to successfully deploying LEMIS in the field."

Measuring 7.2" x 10.7" x 1.5," the Stylistic 500 is a 2.6-pound tablet computer designed for mobile workers running high-end decision support applications in such industries as insurance, utilities, sales automation, public safety and healthcare. Powered by an Intel 486 DX2-50 CPU, the system features RAM expandable to 20 MB; a 260MB or 340MB PCMCIA hard disk drive; one Type III or two Type I/II PCMCIA version 2.0 slots; and an 8-inch transmissive backlit, 64-level VGA screen. The system operates on standard Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) batteries, which can be purchased in most consumer electronic retail outlets.
