Fujitsu Personal Systems Introduces First Low-Cost Pen Tablet with 10.4″ SVGA Display
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — July 21, 1997 — Point 510(TM) Optimized for High Performance and Working Mobility at a Dramatically Lower Cost
Fujitsu Personal Systems, Inc. (FPSI) today introduced the Point 510, the first low-cost Windows(R) 95-compatible pen tablet to incorporate a 10.4" SVGA color display. The Point 510's improved features and performance for "on-the-spot" computing come at a dramatically lower cost than previous offerings. The 10.4" DSTN color display, 100 MHz processor and integrated communications features make it ideal for decision support across a wide range of applications that demand SVGA, while its cost — significantly lower than comparable products — will appeal to value-sensitive customers.
As with all of Fujitsu's Windows-compatible pen tablets (including the just-announced Stylistic 1200-TM), the Point 510 fits seamlessly into large organizations using IT to streamline business processes, such as healthcare providers looking to implement electronic medical records, quantify treatment outcomes, reduce costs, increase revenues and improve the quality of patient care.
"The new Point 510 packs an enormous amount of information in the palm of the hand," explained Geoff Walker, marketing vice president of Fujitsu Personal Systems. "For a workforce that requires a high-density information display and complete mobility, the Point 510 pen tablet is a superior solution in settings where previously only a laptop was possible. By delivering a high-performance system with a rich display at a new low price point, we can offer 'on-the-spot' decision support for a whole new range of price- and performance-sensitive markets."
The Point 510 offers improved performance and a larger display over Fujitsu's market-leading Stylistic 1000(TM), at a dramatically lower cost. The Point 510 delivers robust performance and complete "Designed for Windows 95" compatibility, allowing companies to leverage the Windows applications and development expertise they already have in-house. This gives the Point 510 a compelling advantage over limited-capability PDAs with proprietary operating systems. In addition, the Point 510's handheld form-factor and light weight make it ideal for "on-the-spot" applications where use of a laptop is impossible.
Fujitsu chose to use a SVGA (800 x 600) display on the Point 510 to allow it to be used in the growing number of applications which require high information density and complete compatibility with desktop systems. This means the same information-rich applications that run on enterprise desktops and laptops can now run on a pen tablet. This display capability is expected to be particularly attractive in such industries as healthcare, where high-density information displays are critical. ystem, further increasing the product's appropriateness for mobile decision support applications. The Point 510's fully integrated Proxim RangeLAN2(TM) radio puts the power of enterprise-wide resources in the worker's palm, at a lower cost and higSound Blaster-compatibility, as well as built-in microphone, speaker and input/output jacks.
The Point 510 offers a specially designed high-usage docking capability that allows the pen tablet to be inserted and removed from a dock up to 100,000ablet and/or a keyboard and mouse. The industrial-strength contacts and docks have been designed to withstand vigorous use by multiple shifts of workers over many years.
The tablet comes with a shock-mounted, 2.5", 1.4 GB hard drive, a wide ranattery and up to 64 MB of EDO RAM memory.
Furthermore, the Point 510 can support a broad range of LAN and WAN radios, any of which can easily be slipped into the PC Card slot. The Point 510 is "Radio-Ready(TM)," meaning that it has been designethe computer in any way, and that the computer will not interfere with the radio (thus increasing radio range by allowing reception of weaker signals).
