Sybase to Deliver Enterprise Data to 3Com Palm Computing Platform

WASHINGTON — May 4, 1998 — In a major step toward extending the reach of corporate data to millions of "occasionally connected" users, Sybase, Inc. (Nasdaq: SYBS) today announced support for the 3Com Palm Computing platform with its small "fingerprint" deployment option for Adaptive Server(TM) Anywhere, the industry-leading database optimized for mobile computing. Companies will realize increased employee productivity from the convenience of having immediate access to enterprise information on Palm Computing platform products — including the PalmPilot and Palm III, the IBM WorkPad PC companion, and future products from Symbol Technologies — anywhere, anytime.

With this deployment, Sybase will drive a new class of mobile business applications for the Palm Computing platform, such as sales and field force automation, service, and scheduling. The announcement was made at the International Sybase User Group Conference being held here this week.

"Sybase's support of the Palm Computing platform strengthens our commitment to deliver information anywhere by seamlessly synchronizing data across the enterprise, from 3Com organizers, to laptop and desktop PCs, to enterprise servers," said Terry Stepien, vice president and general manager, Workplace Database Division, Sybase. "Together Sybase and 3Com are breaking new ground by enabling data-driven mobile applications for the Palm Computing platform in industries including healthcare, financial services, retail, and telecommunications."

The new deployment option for Adaptive Server Anywhere will allow organizations to customize the capabilities of the database to match the memory requirements of an application running on a 3Com connected organizer. The customized database can have a memory "fingerprint" as small as 50K. Sybase's two-way synchronization will make it possible for occasionally connected users to download and upload mission-critical data, ensuring that up-to-date information is available both at their fingertips and at their corporate office.

"We have seen incredible demand from our customers for a seamlessly connected SQL database for the Palm Computing platform," said Ed Colligan, vice president of Marketing for Palm Computing, Inc., a 3Com Company. "Sybase's announcement is important to 3Com because we believe that access to corporate information is key to the continued adoption of the Palm Computing platform as the basis for enterprise computing solutions."

"We are pleased that Sybase is continuing to offer leading-edge technology to the mobile market," said Dave Rensin, manager of Mobile Computing Group at Noblestar Systems, a leading systems integrator. "We are working on an enterprise-scale data synchronization framework designed for use with the 3Com PalmPilot and see Sybase's 'fingerprint' database technology as a key enabler for delivering this solution."

Sybase expects to deliver a beta version of the small "fingerprint" deployment option for Adaptive Server Anywhere which targets the 3Com Palm Computing platform in the second half of 1998.
