Palm Computing to Host Second Annual Worldwide Developer Conference

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — September 2, 1998 — Conference to Be Sponsored by Technology Leaders Including IBM, Motorola, QUALCOMM and Symbol Technologies

3Com Corporation (Nasdaq:COMS) today announced it will host its second Worldwide Developer Conference for the Palm Computing(R) platform from December 1-4, 1998, at the Santa Clara Convention Center. The conference will bring together Palm Computing platform developers and marketers to explore new business strategies and technological advances for what has become the de facto open standard for solutions development in the handheld computing industry.

This year's event features a comprehensive conference agenda including over 90 hours of sessions for both current and new developers and their marketing managers. Attendees will learn about the future strategic vision for the Palm Computing platform. Keynotes and sessions will include executives and specialists from Palm Computing along with key platform partners and sponsors such as IBM, Motorola, QUALCOMM and Symbol Technologies. Other session sponsors include Lotus, Oracle, Puma Technology, Riverbed Technologies, Sybase and TRG.

More than 700 participants attended last year's inaugural developer conference in San Francisco. Since then, Palm Computing platform devices have remained the best-selling handheld computing products in the market, and the number of developers of both hardware and software solutions for these devices has grown to 10,000. Currently more than 1,000 third party software titles are available for the Palm Computing platform, including personal and business productivity tools, communications applications, conduits to popular desktop applications, Palm OS system enhancements, utilities and games. In addition, there is an extensive array of software development kits and custom forms-building applications available from a variety of vendors.

According to research firm Dataquest, the Palm Computing platform holds 63 percent of the worldwide standard handheld computing market, making it the leading standard for software and hardware developers. Industry analysts at Creative Strategies predict that more than 2.2 million devices based on the Palm Computing platform will be sold by the end of the year.

"Our solution provider community has always been a primary factor in the success of the Palm Computing platform and has broadened the functionality of our products to help us reach a wide spectrum of customers," said Mark Bercow, vice president of strategic alliances and platform development for Palm Computing, Inc., a 3Com company. "With the support of more than 10,000 developers, our platform is playing an important role in the daily lives of mobile professionals and consumers alike. This conference provides an exciting forum for us to work directly with our developers and partners to cultivate this collective innovation and continue to advance the platform."
