Peripheral Vision Ships PenOp

SAN JOSE, Calif. — September 21, 1993 — At Mobile World, Peripheral Vision Limited Tuesday launched PenOp, a range of software products for the handwritten signature in pen computing.

The first utility, PenOp/MAS (Machine Access Security) restricts pen computer access to a pre-defined list of users by asking them literally to "sign on". Supporting multiple users with different levels of privilege, PenOp/MAS provides the high level of security needed in mobile computing, while being much easier to use and administer than passwords. Shipping today is PenOp/MAS for PenPoint, with versions for other environments under development.

Also shipping is PenOp/Admin, running on Windows or OS/2, a host- based application for managing a fleet of pen computers and their users from a central location.

PenOp/Server, at the heart of the PenOp range, maintains a database of unique invisible signature dynamics for each individual, and contains the core PenOp dynamic link library (DLL). These are used by all client applications wishing to capture, verify and/or manage signatures, and have been specifically designed to provide consistent functionality across a wide range of pen computer and host platforms. Programmatic access to the PenOp/Server will be provided by the PenOp/SDK.

"We see the ability to capture a handwritten signature as one of the most distinctive features of pen computing", said Jeremy Newman, Managing Director of Peripheral Vision. "We have designed PenOp to provide safe and simple security, and to enhance the legal acceptability of signatures captured on pen computers.

"With the ability for other developers to use PenOp in their own applications, we are creating an opportunity for the pen computing market to finally remove one of the most persistent barriers to the replacement of paper in Information Technology – the handwritten signature."

Peripheral Vision Limited, a privately held company headquartered in Frome, Somerset, UK, was founded in 1990 to develop, market and support software for the pen interface, worldwide.

Note to editors: PenOp(TM) is a trademark of Peripheral Vision Ltd.
