Metrowerks Introduces CodeWarrior 6 at Apple Computer’s Worldwide Developers Conference — Support for Win32, Magic Cap and OpenDoc Development Introduced

AUSTIN, Texas — May 8, 1995 — Metrowerks announced the immediate availability of CodeWarrior 6, the sixth major CD-ROM release of its popular CodeWarrior Development Tools package.

CodeWarrior 6 includes support for exception handling in the C++ compilers as well as support for Object Pascal in the Pascal compilers.

Metrowerks also announced today that an additional developer release CD is included with each CodeWarrior 6 package delivering a certain number of key technologies under development at Metrowerks. The Developer Release CD includes development releases of CodeWarrior for Win32, Magic Cap and CFM68K development.

Following the licensing of the MacApp line of frameworks from Apple Computer announced Monday, CodeWarrior 6 also includes MacApp 3.1.3 and MacApp 3.3a1 for C++ programmers as well as MacApp2PPC for Pascal programmers. CodeWarrior for Win32-targeted application development

Metrowerks' new Macintosh-hosted Win32 backend and linker support development of Win32 applications using Macintosh and Power Macintosh computers. Metrowerks C/C++ for Win32 also supports 2- machine debugging of applications running on Microsoft Windows NT operating system from Macintosh or Power Macintosh.

Metrowerks licensed and distributes all necessary Win32 headers and DLLs from Microsoft Corporation in order to facilitate Windows development for Macintosh developers. CodeWarrior for Magic Cap development

Metrowerks and General Magic announced today the immediate availability of the first developer release CodeWarrior Magic/MPW CD. Metrowerks also included this toolkit on the Developer Release CD in order to allow customers to evaluate the new technologies. CodeWarrior for CFM68K development

Metrowerks' new compilers and linkers for CFM68K support the new runtime architecture from Apple Computer designed for OpenDoc development as well as future operating systems. These tools are provided in support of OpenDoc development on Macintosh. Metrowerks already supports OpenDoc development on Power Macintosh. CodeWarrior Open Architecture

Metrowerks also introduced version 1.3d1 of the CodeWarrior Development Environment with initial support for dropin tools. The version on the Developer Release CD includes transformers for C/C++ and allows developers to use one development environment for either Macintosh or Power Macintosh development without switching between different applications. OpenDoc DR2 included on Developer CD

Metowerks and Apple also signed an agreement today to allow Metrowerks to provide the OpenDoc DR2 release from Apple Computer on the Developer Release CD. Even though CodeWarrior 6 has not been qualified against OpenDoc DR2, the release provides customers with easy access to Opendoc development and changes are minor for correct inter-operation of the two technologies.

"CodeWarrior 6 is a real statement from Metrowerks," said Greg Galanos, president & CEO of Metrowerks. "We are clearly demonstrating our intent to make CodeWarrior on Macintosh the host development environment of choice.

"By providing two additional development targets to the CodeWarrior product offering, we are expanding the number of opportunities our customers may pursue while maintaining their investment in Macintosh. With CodeWarrior 6, you can use the computer you love to use to build applications for other operating environments such as Windows NT and Magic Cap.

"This is true leverage of our customers' investment in their development experience and culture."

"Metrowerks delivered the first native development environment for the Power Macintosh and continues to deliver top-notch Power Macintosh development tools," said Pat Harding, senior manager, Apple Developer Tools Marketing.

"With CFM-68K support, broad Apple frameworks support, and improvements in PowerPC code optimizations, CodeWarrior now enables developers to take greater advantage of the Power Macintosh and OpenDoc platforms. The new x86 back-end coupled with OpenDoc technology and the OpenDoc Development Framework (ODF) dramatically expands the world of cross-platform delivery to Macintosh developers."

"The availability of CodeWarrior Magic/MPW marks the achievement of an important milestone in our on-going efforts to establish Magic Cap as a world standard for communicating platforms," said Marc Porat, Chairman and CEO of General Magic. "We look forward to developers worldwide applying their talents, creativity, and energy to developing applications for the Magic Cap platform."

"I am pleased to announce that Microsoft has licensed to Metrowerks the components needed to develop for Windows, through our OpenTools Program," said Doug Henrich, Director of Microsoft Developer Relations.

"And for their users, we've also provided Metrowerks with draft chapters of Stephen Chernicoff's forthcoming book on 'Windows 95 Programming for Mac Developers'. With these resources, CodeWarrior 6 makes it easy and productive for Macintosh developers to explore programming for Windows — directly from a Macintosh." Pricing and Availability

Metrowerks also announced today that the final CodeWarrior x86 tools will be included as part of the standard CodeWarrior Gold subscription package at the same price of US$ 399 in September 1995 or US$ 199 in the case of renewals. CodeWarrior Magic/MPW is priced at US$ 299 and includes 3 additional CDs over the next year.

CodeWarrior Bronze for 68K Macintosh development is also available for US$ 99. These prices include full network support from Metrowerks' Technical Support group. The products are available from Metrowerks and its resellers.
