Online Programming Courses Begin at CodeWarriorU
AUSTIN, Texas — February 1, 2000 — Metrowerks today announced more than 10,000 people have enrolled in CodeWarriorU since the site went live on Jan. 5.
Metrowerks created CodeWarriorU — the first online institute for free programming courses — to address the nationwide shortage of programming talent.
The first series of courses focus on programming for the Mac OS and begin Feb. 7. The courses filled completely in less than two weeks. Registration begins Feb. 3 for introductory courses on C++ programming for Windows and programming with Java. Both of these courses begin Feb. 28.
"Metrowerks is the industry's only provider of free and convenient Web-based programmer training," said David Perkins, president and CEO, Metrowerks. "CodeWarriorU is the leading source for online programmer education, providing access to professional programming instruction for students of any skill level."
Introductory and advanced courses covering programming for Windows, Macintosh, Java and all Motorola embedded processor architectures are in development and will be offered throughout the year. In addition, a prep course for high school students taking the Advanced Placement (AP) C++ Exam will be available by the end of the second quarter of this year.
"The investment Metrowerks continues to make in the software development industry should be lauded," said Mark Driver, research director, Gartner Group E-Business Technologies. "The online CodeWarriorU classes Metrowerks offers are an innovative approach to addressing the industry's shortage of skilled programmers."
"As technology companies face the ongoing challenge of finding and retaining talented programmers, offering online education and training is an innovative and resourceful step in bridging the talent gap," said Betty Otter-Nickerson, president, Austin Software Council. "We believe that successful high-technology companies can reward, improve and grow their developer staff by encouraging enrollment and participation in online technology classes and other industry-focused meetings and conferences."
According to Dane Knecht, a junior at Episcopal High School in Houston who was a beta tester for CodeWarriorU, "I think CodeWarriorU's format is really simple to use and I love the fact that, as a student, I have scheduled, online access to an instructor."
Knecht added, "I'm enrolled in the Introduction to C++ for Mac course and I plan on taking the AP C++ Exam prep course as well."
