Oracle and General Magic Team to Deliver Intuitive Data Access; Joint Development Allows Users of Magic Cap to Access Oracle Media Server
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. — January 6, 1994 — Oracle Corp., the world's largest supplier of database software and services, and General Magic, Inc., the creator of Magic Cap and Telescript technologies, today announced the signing of a cooperative development agreement to participate in joint development and marketing activities aimed at delivering broad information access from an intuitive user interface.
As a part of the agreement, Oracle and General Magic are integrating the Magic Cap platform with the Oracle Media Server. The Oracle Media Server, server software that defines how information is stored, retrieved and reaches its destination, is based on powerful database and messaging technology which can process the thousands of transactions per second and manage the multiple data types (such as audio, video and text) that are required for interactive business and consumer services. The Oracle Media Server will be formally announced on Jan. 18, 1994 in a worldwide event.
Oracle and General Magic's joint work will enable any user of the Magic Cap platform to access a full spectrum of back-end data services, such as database servers, mail servers, file servers as well as multimedia servers. ''With the integration of Oracle and General Magic, end users will have an extremely friendly interface to the vast array of data that exists in Oracle databases,'' said Marc Benioff, corporate vice president of Oracle's New Technology Division.
''We feel the Oracle Media Server is one of the key links in enabling the Information Age,'' said Marc Porat, chairman of the board and chief executive officer, General Magic.
