Skytel and General Magic Work Together to Provide Wireless Mobile Communications
SAN FRANCISCO — January 6, 1994 — Skytel Corp., the country's leading provider of nationwide paging and one-way wireless messaging services, announced Thursday that it is working with General Magic Inc. to make wireless communications a basic and easy-to-use feature of hand-held communicators and personal computers.
The two companies are joining forces to integrate the Skytel System of wireless messaging and information delivery with Magic Cap software.
"Communication on-the-move is a fundamental part of business today, and should be a fundamental part of the computing and communications tools we use today. Our work with General Magic will enable corporate travelers to link their mobile communicators with The SkyTel System," said David W. Garrison, president of SkyTel. "We are pleased that the SkyTel System has been selected as one of the technologies supported by the Magic Cap platform."
Users receiving wireless messages via The SkyTel System and AT&T PersonaLink Services will be able to access "smart" features that prioritize incoming messages and information, including filtering based on subject or sender and rules-based, customized delivery of messages and mail alerts. Plans also call for the integration of SkyTel service with General Magic's Magic Cap software so that users will be able to rapidly address and send alphanumeric messages by touching an image of the SkyTel logo on their screens.
Various manufacturers are expected to introduce products featuring SkyTel and General Magic technology throughout 1994.
