Electronic Mail and Messaging Systems (EMMS) Announces the Annual Electronic Mail Industry Award Winners
WASHINGTON — March 2, 1995 — The winners of the Thirteenth Annual EMMSy Electronic Mail Industry Awards — General Magic, America Online Inc., World Wide Web, Apple Newton MessagePad and cc:Mail — were announced today by EMMS. The EMMSy is the only industry award for which E-mail users and vendors from around the world nominate and select the winners.
This year EMMSy ballots came in from 19 countries, including Finland and Bulgaria. "The exceptionally high and diverse number of voters reflects EMMSy's worldwide recognition," said Eric Arnum, editor of Electronic Mail and Messaging Systems (EMMS), the 18-year-old industry newsletter that sponsors the event. Arnum estimates that there are more than 50 million E-mail users worldwide.
Winning as the "Messaging Event of the Year" is the launch of the General Magic and AT&T alliance. The alliance featured the debut of the AT&T PersonaLink(SM) Services and the Sony Magic Link(TM) personal intelligent communicator. AT&T PersonaLink Services uses General Magic's Telescript technology, and the Sony Magic Link personal communicator uses General Magic's Magic Cap software.
America Online Inc., based in Vienna, Virginia, won this year's "Messaging Company of the Year" award. According to company officials, America Online is the fastest growing provider of online services in the U.S. with more than 2 million subscribers.
The World Wide Web won the "Messaging Service of the Year" award for its unprecedented growth in 1994. "We are honored to receive the EMMSy award and look forward to the technological improvements of the future that will allow for more interactivity on the Web," said Tim Bermers-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web.
The "Messaging Software of the Year" was awarded to cc:Mail for the Mobile, Router 5.1 and View software packages. cc:Mail is a unit of Lotus Development Corp., located in Mountain View, California.
The Apple Newton MessagePad(TM) won the "Messaging Hardware of the Year" award. Re-introduced in 1994, The Apple Newton MessagePad is a hand-held communications device that provides personal communications, wireless messaging and wireless fax. Apple Computer Inc. is based in Cupertino, Calif. The MessagePad won an EMMSy last year in the same category.
