General Magic Announces Newly Formed Magic Cap and Telescript Divisions
SUNNYVALE, Calif. — September 8, 1995 — General Magic, Inc. (Nasdaq: GMGC) announced today that it has reorganized into two market-focused business divisions for its Magic Cap(TM) and Telescript(TM) platforms.
The newly formed Magic Cap division is managed by Steve Schramm (36), vice President and general manager, who previously served as General Magic's vice president of Engineering. The Telescript division is managed by Lucia Hicks-Williams (36), vice President and general manager, who previously served as the company's vice president of product marketing and strategic planning. The company is actively recruiting for a senior vice president to oversee the two divisions. Both Schramm and Hicks-Williams will report to the senior vice president, and in the interim report directly to Marc Porat, the company's chairman and chief executive officer.
"In the last five years, General Magic has produced two software platforms, assembled a world class alliance of Founding Partners, and developed a team of more than 200 Magicians," said Marc Porat, chairman and chief executive officer. "Our decision to shift from a functional to a divisional business structure enables us to better match our resources with the markets we're currently targeting for each platform."
The Magic Cap division expects to focus its efforts on developing platform and application software for a variety of communications vehicles, including personal intelligent communicators (PICs), Windows(TM) and Macintosh(TM) personal computers, mobile phones, and screen-based phones. The Telescript division expects to focus its efforts on developing network-based platforms and application software for public network operators, wireless networks, the Internet and corporate enterprise. The functions included in the divisions are product marketing, product development, QA, documentation, developer technical support, evangelism and marketing communications.
In addition, the company announced a new worldwide field operations division managed by Bill Keating, vice president and general manager, who previously served as the company's vice president of sales and customer engineering. The division includes worldwide sales, customer engineering, systems integration, consulting and customer support. Separately, Michael Stern continues to serve as the company's general counsel and vice president of business affairs, and acting chief financial officer. The company's executive staff reports to Marc Porat, chairman and chief executive officer.
