Fujitsu Launches on-Line Marketing Service Using General Magic’s Agent Technology; Provides Targeted Advertising to More Than a Million Customers

SUNNYVALE, Calif. — September 9, 1996 — General Magic (Nasdaq: GMGC) today announced that Fujitsu, Ltd. is using General Magic's agent technology in its new iMi (Interactive Marketing Interface) online marketing service which was unveiled recently in Tokyo by Fujitsu and Japanese direct marketing firm Do House Co., Ltd. The iMi service allows advertisers to interact directly with target customers, providing valuable services and information. It will be officially accessible beginning September 13, 1996 through the Internet and NIFTY-Serve, Japan's largest online service, with more than 1.9 million subscribers.

"Telescript agent-based technology provides the foundation for the iMi service," said Akira Kamakura, General Manager of the Lifemedia Division of Fujitsu. "It is an innovative approach to enhancing the customer's Internet experience. We look forward to continuing to take advantage of its power and usefulness." Fujitsu has been an active member of the General Magic Alliance since 1994.

"General Magic is pleased that Fujitsu and Do House are using Telescript technology in the iMi online service," said Marc Porat, General Magic's Chief Executive Officer. "The iMi service demonstrates a compelling, practical commercial application of agent technology in one of the world's largest online environments. This application maps closely to our vision of mobile, active agents."

The iMi service provides advertisers the ability to interact directly with specific segments of the consumer market through the use of software agents, while ensuring consumers remain anonymous to advertisers. Consumers submit a personal profile to iMi indicating characteristics such as product categories of interest, hobbies, travel habits, and maximum number of emails per week they want to receive from the iMi service. In turn, customers receive by electronic mail product announcements, advertisements, and marketing surveys from advertisers based on their personal profile information. By answering marketing surveys or acknowledging receipt of advertisements, consumers earn iMi points redeemable for gift certificates and phone cards.
