AT&T Announces Discontinuation of AT&T PersonaLink Services

PARSIPPANY, N.J. — July 11, 1996 — AT&T today informed AT&T PersonaLink(SM) Services customers that the service will be discontinued on August 30, 1996. This action is a continuation of AT&T's strategy to shift from proprietary network-based services to the Internet.

Introduced in September of 1994, AT&T PersonaLink Services used Telescript(TM) agent technology to enable Sony Magic Link(TM) and Motorola Envoy(TM) personal communicators to perform customized messaging tasks.

Customers of Sony Magic Link and Motorola Envoy will still be able to use the devices for mobile messaging through services currently bundled in each device, such as America Online and/or RadioMail(R), or through the use of third-party software. In addition, they will for the first time be able to use these personal communicators to connect to Internet electronic mailboxes and browse the World Wide Web using software from Active Paper, Inc., which was recently acquired by General Magic.

AT&T said all the unit's employees will be reassigned to other parts of the company.

Telescript software was developed by General Magic, Inc, founded in May 1990 and headquartered in Sunnyvale, Calif. AT&T continues to be a member of the General Magic Founding Partners Council, which also includes Cable & Wireless, France Telecom, Fujitsu, Matsushita, Mitsubishi Corp, Mitsubishi Electric, Motorola, Nortel, NTT, Oki, Royal Dutch PTT, Philips, Sanyo, Sony and Toshiba. AT&T PersonaLink is a service mark of AT&T. Magic Link is a trademark of Sony Electronics Inc. Telescript is a trademark of General Magic. Envoy is a trademark of Motorola. RadioMail is a registered trademark of RadioMail Corp.
