General Magic Unveils Internet-Focused Strategy Plans and Products for Internet, Intranets, and World Wide Web
SUNNYVALE, Calif. — June 25, 1996 — General Magic today revealed the details of its strategy and product plans for the Internet, corporate intranets, and the World Wide Web. The strategy announced today builds on and continues the company's original vision of making networks powerful yet easy-to-use. The components of General Magic's new strategy are targeted to the new markets and opportunities presented by the explosive growth of the Internet, intranets, and World Wide Web since the company's founding in 1990.
General Magic's new strategy involves several distinct aspects. The company is unbundling its Magic Cap(TM) and Telescript(TM) products, thus allowing the company to build independent brand identify for each product line and pursue specific segments of the Internet market with targeted product offerings. The company is also ending its sole reliance on up-front licensing fees and annuity streams from exclusive partners. General Magic's channel strategy has been augmented to include OEMs, value-added resellers (VARs), systems integrators, and independent software vendors, in addition to its existing partnerships. Also, the company is embracing Internet and Web standards and intends to integrate Web and Internet functionality across its product lines.
"General Magic has evolved our business strategy and product plans to embrace the Internet and the standards on which it is based," said Marc Porat, chairman and CEO of General Magic. "The plans and products announced today put General Magic squarely in the business of providing software to make the Internet more accessible, more productive, and more secure for business professionals, developers, device manufacturers, service providers, and enterprises."
"General Magic's expertise and experience provide a solid basis for pursuing the Internet," said Bob Kelsch, President and COO of General Magic. "General Magic is known for developing communications-centric software and forging relationships with leading companies worldwide. We have the talent, competencies, partners and products to become a very active participant in the Internet areas we are focusing on."
General Magic's Communications Products Division provides Magic Cap software that connects busy professionals to the information and services of the Internet, in an engaging way. The Communications Products Division's products include the Magic Cap platform for communicators and Magic Cap for Windows, Presto!Links and Presto!Mail applications for the Magic Cap platform, and derivative Magic Cap technology, such as the SoftModem software modem.
General Magic's Active Internet Products Division has developed the Tabriz(TM) product line based on General Magic's Telescript agent technology. For companies who use the Internet to deliver information, products and services — internally or externally — Tabriz transforms passive networks into active, persistent and secure business vehicles.
