PTT Telecom BV Licenses General Magic’s Telescript; Second European Operator To License Telescript Technology
SUNNYVALE, Calif. — February 21, 1996 — General Magic, Inc. (Nasdaq: GMGC) today announced that PTT Telecom BV has licensed General Magic's Telescript(TM) technology. PTT Telecom BV, a subsidiary of Royal PTT Netherlands, is a national telecommunications carrier of the Netherlands and is a founder and equal shareholder of Unisource. PTT Telecom joins AT&T, NTT, and France Telecom as telecommunications service providers with Telescript licenses.
"PTT Telecom's licensing of Telescript technology reflects their commitment to bring interactive information and services into the lives of their customers," said Marc Porat, chairman and chief executive officer of General Magic. "We are pleased PTT Telecom has chosen Telescript and look forward to helping them deliver on this commitment."
Telescript Enables Active Agents
Telescript technology is designed to enable users to launch electronic surrogates, called agents, into networks to search for and monitor information and to interact with services and other agents on a user's behalf. Telescript technology includes an extensible, object-oriented remote programming language for creating active, personalized agent-based network services.
PTT Joins Major Service Providers
The PTT Telecom agreement is the second commercial Telescript license to a European network operator. During 1995, General Magic alliance member France Telecom licensed Telescript and announced a trial service called Pyramide. In 1996, NTT FAN completed preparations for a trial on-line service in Japan based on General Magic's Telescipt and Magic Cap technologies. NTT FAN expects this test service, named Paseo, to begin operations on March 12, 1996 and to support 5,000 users. Alliance members Sony and Motorola introduced communicators based on General Magic's Magic Cap platform in late 1994 in the United States and AT&T launched AT&T PersonaLink Services(SM), a new public network service based on Telescript.
