PenRight! Software to be Offered on the NEC VersaPad
IRVINE, Calif. — July 19, 1993 — Effective Monday, the NEC VersaPad pen computer now supports PenRight! and is able to run the more than 400 applications currently available in the PenRight! operating environment.
The four-pound NEC VersaPad is a powerful 486SL tablet pen computer designed to be used in mobile data collection, order entry, sales, claims inspections and medical record keeping applications.
"By combining PenRight! and the NEC VersaPad NEC can now provide mobile workers with a full-featured platform on which to run vertical applications," said Bobbi Burns, director of sales and marketing, software products in the vertical systems group of AST Research Inc. Recent reports from industry analysts indicate that PenRight! has captured more than 80 percent of the pen-based market. In the last year, PenRight! sales have increased more than 200 percent.
The NEC VersaPad has been certified by PenRight! and now has the ability to run applications developed in the PenRight! environment for such industries as pharmaceutical, transportation, government, public safety, consumer goods, health care, oil & gas and utilities. The PenRight! applications were developed to meet customers needs in performing such vertical tasks as data collection, inspections, route accounting, inventory control, shipping and receiving, sales force automation and patient monitoring.
"The largest opportunity for pen-based computing is in the vertical mission-specific applications," said Renee Bader, manager strategic marketing, portable computer systems, NEC. "The PenRight! operating environment continues to lead the market in corporate acceptance for this category. NEC plans to utilize PenRight!'s established community of developers that have shipped proven applications for the past three years."
The applications running in the PenRight! environment were developed with application development tools including PenRight! Pro, padBase, Power Pen Pal and dataNow. NEC is licensing PenRight! for resale to users wanting to run software under the PenRight! environment.
The NEC VersaPad now joins the Fujitsu PoqetPad, GRiD Convertible and PalmPAD, NCR 3125/3130, Norand Pen View and Samsung PenMaster as products currently licensed to run applications developed with the PenRight! operating environment.
PenRight! is a DOS-based graphical user interface and handwriting recognition system for uppercase and lowercase characters, pen gestures and international language support (U.S. English, U.K. English, French, Canadian, Spanish, German, Italian, Danish, Norwegian).
