Handwriting and Speech Recognition Announced for Memos Open Operating Environment

PALO ALTO, Calif. — September 24, 1996 — The Lexicus Division of Motorola (NYSE:MOT) today endorsed Memos(tm), a new open operating environment for messaging products from Motorola. Lexicus will port both its QuickPrint(tm) handwriting recognition software and its CrystalTalk(tm) speech recognition software to the Memos operating environment.

Memos, available from the Platform Systems Division of Motorola, is an open, client/server architecture optimized for the delivery of personal messaging applications and of compelling, customizable information services for pagers, smart phones and other communications devices.

VOICE RECOGNITION ON MEMOS

Motorola Lexicus CrystalTalk(tm) speech recognition software was designed specifically for noisy environments, such as driving on a freeway with the windows open. CrystalTalk speech recognition software has demonstrated 99.8% accuracy in quiet, office environments and 96% in high noise environments. CrystalTalk software is speaker dependent and works for any language including English, French, German, Farsi, Japanese, Cantonese and Mandarin.

HANDWRITING RECOGNITION ON MEMOS

Motorola Lexicus QuickPrint(tm) handwriting recognition software enables users to enter text into small handheld devices using a stylus. QuickPrint software is a writer-independent print recognizer that is small, fast and flexible. The QuickPrint recognizer can be rapidly customized to reflect the idiosyncrasies of an individual's writing style. The QuickPrint recognizer can be configured to use as little as 30K of memory or, with a 50,000-word dictionary, less than 200K.
