Metricom, Inc. Announces Support for Microsoft Windows CE Platform

LOS GATOS, Calif. — September 16, 1996 — Metricom, Inc. (Nasdaq: MCOM), a leading provider of wireless data communications and network solutions, today announced its intended development support of the Microsoft(R) Windows(R) CE platform for handheld PCs (HPC).

"We believe that Microsoft's new open platform for handheld devices will allow Windows CE software and hardware developers to take full advantage of Metricom's Ricochet wireless data service, and to deliver the full promise of this emerging product category, especially Internet services," said Don Wood, executive vice president and general manager, Ricochet.

Ricochet's wireless technology is based on spread-spectrum, packet radio transmission through a patented mesh architecture network of intelligent radio nodes. Subscribers of the Ricochet Wireless Modem and Internet Service use it to access information from the Internet and the World Wide Web, and communicate with E-mail and on-line services from their laptops or portable devices. Since Ricochet does not require the subscriber to connect with a phone line, the service is a perfect solution for professionals on the go. Ricochet currently supports Windows 3.1, Windows 95 and Macintosh, and is compatible with the Internet protocol and most communications software.
