NEC Clarification to Microsoft Oct. 16 Announcement Regarding Microsoft’s Support for MIPS Platform
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — October 17, 1996 — For attribution to Mr. Shigeki Matsue, president of NEC Electronics, Santa Clara, Calif. Issued Oct. 17, 1996.
"Recent press reports have mistakenly stated that NEC and Microsoft will no longer support the MIPS RISC platform.
This is incorrect.
"Microsoft and NEC continue to work on a variety of activities supporting the MIPS architecture. As recently as Sept. 16, Microsoft announced Windows CE, an operating system for handheld PCs which runs on a MIPS RISC processor, NEC's VR4101(TM). That commitment stands.
"NEC has not changed its commitment to the MIPS architecture. NEC's implementation of the MIPS architecture is a tremendous success. Our VR4300(TM) is in every Nintendo 64 and our MIPS RISC chips are in a variety of systems, including all models of Silicon Graphics systems — from desktops to supercomputers — and in Tandems' Himalaya fault-tolerant computers.
"Sales of all NEC MIPS RISC processors, from the lowest-level embedded designs to the most advanced 6-million transistor VR10000(TM), are all exceeding sales projections and expectations. We have many key embedded and systems design wins pending, assuring a vibrant future for all of NEC's MIPS RISC processors. Our commitment to the MIPS architecture and our customers will continue with the ongoing production of high-volume products and product enhancements for customer needs."
