River Run Software Group Announces Mail on the Run! for Microsoft Windows CE

LAS VEGAS — November 18, 1996 — River Run Software Group(R) announced today the availability of its Mail on the Run!(R) product for the Windows(R) CE operating system platform. This new version of River Run Software Group's popular remote e-mail access software product has been developed specifically to integrate seamlessly into the new Microsoft(R) Windows CE platform and to take full advantage of the power Windows CE-based software provides to handheld PCs (HPCs). The Mail on the Run! software for Windows CE provides users of HPCs with direct and remote access to the world's most popular LAN-based e-mail systems, including Microsoft Mail and Lotus(R) cc:Mail(TM), and to the Internet via the mail system's Internet gateway.

With Mail on the Run! for Windows CE and an HPC, users can access their e-mail when they are at their desks, when they are waiting at an airport, in the middle of a meeting…at any time from anywhere. River Run Software Group worked closely with Microsoft to insure that the Mail on the Run! product blends completely with the Windows CE Inbox. Once a person knows how to use the Windows CE Inbox and Contacts functions, he or she merely selects a Mail on the Run! mail service, e.g., Microsoft Mail or cc:Mail, to send and receive e-mail. Users of Mail on the Run! for Windows CE can send, receive, store, forward and reply to their LAN-based e-mail messages all from within the Inbox function.

Mail on the Run! software for Windows CE provides users complete flexibility in e-mail access options. If a person is in the office, the HPC may be directly attached to a Windows 95-based desktop in order to download or process e-mail. When away from the office, a user can access his or her e-mail remotely over a telephone, circuit switched cellular or wireless packet data network, such as the ARDIS(TM) network. Full support is available with each of these connection options for Inbox online or offline processing.

The Mail on the Run! product consists of two components: client software that is installed on the HPC, and agent software that is installed on a Windows 95-based desktop or Windows NT(R) 4.0 system with Remote Access Service (RAS). The system upon which the agent is installed is connected to the LAN where the e-mail system post office resides. Mail on the Run! for Windows CE takes full advantage of the security provided by RAS authentication. "With Windows CE, Microsoft has broken the barrier for users of Windows-based desktops and provided them with a true mobile companion product for Windows," said Dr. Trilok Manocha, president and CEO of River Run Software Group. He added, "This platform together with our Mail on the Run! product for Windows CE makes it possible for users to always be connected and in control of their work. They can manage their important e-mail communications from anywhere. We believe that Mail on the Run! is the key to full mobility of this new class of mobile devices called HPCs."

"We are excited that River Run has delivered on its commitment to developing applications for the Windows CE platform with the delivery of Mail on the Run!," said Jon Magill, director of marketing, consumer appliances group at Microsoft. "With industry support from companies like River Run, the Windows CE platform will allow handheld computing to expand to its full potential." "ARDIS is committed to wirelessly enabling the mainstream applications that mobile professionals depend on at the office," said Dan Croft, senior vice president, Marketing Operations at ARDIS.
