RAM Mobile Data Makes Drivers Available to Support Microsoft Windows CE Platform

LAS VEGAS — November 18, 1996 — RAM Mobile Data is making available the beta version of software drivers for hardware manufacturers and software developers who are utilizing the new Microsoft Windows CE operating system platform. The drivers provide an interface between the communications service of RAM's network, and the applications software.

William Lenahan, president and CEO of RAM Mobile Data, said, "Microsoft Windows CE is the first offering of its kind with the potential to consolidate the handheld PC market around a single operating system that will drive the creation of communications applications for a very broad marketplace. The handheld PCs operating on the Windows CE platform will be used by mobile professionals, a market segment already addressed by RAM to provide wireless solutions to meet their communications needs."

Handheld PCs utilizing the Windows CE platform will enable mobile professionals to organize, communicate and access information through a variety of new products that can communicate with each other, share and exchange information with Windows-based PCs, and provide access to the Internet for Web browsing or e-mail. The handheld PC user sees a screen with an interface similar to a Windows-based desktop PC, and can perform many of the same functions as Windows permits on a desktop PC.

Lenahan added, "Our support for Microsoft Windows CE and our working relationships with the handheld PC manufacturers and software developers who will use the operating system show RAM's commitment to market-driven solutions to meet our customers' communications needs, as well as our commitment to working with 'best-of-breed' companies such as Microsoft."

"Microsoft applauds RAM Mobile Data's support of Windows CE, which can extend the handheld PC architecture into the realm of interactive wireless computing," said Jon Magill, director of marketing, consumer appliances group at Microsoft. "Support from companies such as RAM Mobile Data will help expand the new category for handheld PCs."

As new categories of non-PC business and consumer devices utilizing the Windows CE platform and software applications are developed for other market segments, RAM will be able to provide its expertise in wireless communications to those potential customers as well.
