Wright Strategies Signs Agreement with Microsoft Canada; Microsoft Canada to Employ Handheld PC Technology for Data Collection at Retailers’ Stores

SAN DIEGO — November 18, 1996 — Wright Strategies, a leader in end-to-end data solutions using handheld computer technology, Monday announced the signing of an agreement with Microsoft Canada.

The agreement specifies that Wright Strategies will develop a custom software application for Microsoft to enable data collection from outlet stores using a Handheld PCs running Windows CE.

Currently, Microsoft Canada's outlet coverage representatives use notebook computers and paper forms to collect data at software retailers' outlets for later upload to servers running Windows NT.

''We've used notebook PCs for data collection, but found them impractical in many situations because of their size and limited battery life,'' said John Traynor, national retail sales and marketing manager for Microsoft Canada. ''And when the reps use paper forms, we face additional data entry costs, a longer turnaround time and increased potential for error.''

According to Traynor, each of the 12 outlet representatives is responsible for collecting data from 60-100 outlets. Questions on the call report keep Microsoft Canada up-to-date on product stocking, merchandising material placement and competitive activity.

Wright Strategies is developing the application based on its CommLogic technology for Windows CE, which offers a platform- independent solution incorporating both server and administrator functions.

In addition, CommLogic's database on the Handheld PC and powerful communications module ensure accurate and intelligent data collection, storage and retrieval.

Because CommLogic incorporates an open, object-oriented architecture, Microsoft Canada will be able to use its existing database structure.

The CommLogic client will be loaded onto the Handheld PCs before they are distributed to the outlet representatives, and a gateway application will be developed to provide for data transfer between Microsoft Canada's existing Microsoft SQL Server database and the Handheld PCs.

''We are pleased that Microsoft Canada will be our first customer to leverage our new CommLogic technology,'' said Jay Wright, founder and chief executive officer of Wright Strategies.

''The connectivity with enterprise data sources enabled by CommLogic, combined with its sophisticated administrator component will provide Microsoft Canada with the foundation layer necessary for successful integration of their mobile computing solution.''

Founded in 1994, Wright Strategies provides software and services that allow existing enterprise information systems to be extended using handheld computers.

Wright Strategies' flagship product line, FormLogic, is used by more than 200 companies for a variety of tasks, including market research, surveys, restaurant audits, home inspection and sales automation. The company is based in San Diego and is privately held.
