In-Stat Predicts Compaq Will Revolutionize the Workstation Market and Windows CE will Revitalize the Handheld PC Market

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — February 24, 1997 — In-Stat predicts the impact of two events on the PC market: Compaq's entry into the workstation market, and the arrival of Windows CE in the handheld PC market.

"Compaq's Assault on the Workstation Market," In-Stat's PC & Peripheral Service report number PC9701WS, analyzes the impact Compaq will have on the workstation market. It also compares Compaq's workstation strategy with strategies of leading workstation suppliers.

This market is strategic to Compaq's objective to be the third largest computer company in the world by the end of this decade, and a critical element in Compaq's goal to be an enterprise computer company instead of a PC company.

In-Stat Senior Analyst, Norm Bogen, expects Compaq to become the leading supplier of workstations based on Intel processors and Microsoft's Windows NT operating system, paralleling Compaq's success in the server market.

It may happen in 1997, but more likely by 1998 Compaq will be the market share leader in the PC Workstation segment.

"Windows CE Handhelds — A First Pass," report number PC9702MI, details the impact of Microsoft Windows CE on the handheld PC market. At Comdex, seven vendors introduced Windows CE-based handheld PCs.

The companies are targeting on-the-go professionals who are away from their desk frequently but not necessarily traveling. The CE-based handheld PCs are being hailed as another product in the market for digital convergence of computers and communication devices.

Many hardware manufacturers are now willing to enter the PDA market because Windows CE offers a standard, open, and familiar platform for users and developers alike, simplifying synchronization with a desktop or notebook host computer. In-Stat's Michelle Abraham expects CE-based handheld PCs unit shipments to increase over 2000 percent in 1997. However, there are several hurdles to clear before large numbers are sold.

"Compaq's Assault on the Workstation Market" is specially priced at $ 995, and "Windows CE Handhelds — A First Pass" is $ 1695. Price includes analyst inquiry privileges on topics covered in these reports. Major credit cards accepted.
