Arthritis Foundation Commends CIC’s Handwriter, a Pen-based Ergonomic Editing Tool for Computers
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. — March 27, 1997 — The Arthritis Foundation recently awarded Communication Intelligence Corporation (CIC) (NASDAQ:CICI) its prestigious "Ease-of-Use" Seal of Commendation to the Handwriter, an ergonomic editing tool that reduces the use of a computer keyboard and mouse by allowing users to edit computer documents with a pen. The honor follows a favorable evaluation by a review panel of health professionals and arthritis patients who assessed the Handwriter's ease of use and accessibility for people with arthritis.
CIC developed the Handwriter to improve productivity and reduce health risks associated with prolonged computer use. Information written on the Handwriter tablet turns into type on the computer, making editing tasks faster and easier than through use of the computer keyboard. Handwriter also allows one to electronically sign letters and documents, eliminating the need to print hard copies for signing before faxing. The Handwriter tablet can be used at one's desk or on one's lap, depending on the position that provides the user greatest comfort.
By supporting forearms and hands in a natural position, Handwriter is designed to offer relief from the tendon stress caused by having fingers continuously poised over a keyboard or gripping a mouse. The Company believes Handwriter is particularly useful to those with arthritis, and also helps minimize the risk of developing repetitive stress injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome even for those without apparent pain or joint problems. "CIC is pleased to receive the award from the Arthritis Foundation for Handwriter. We believe Handwriter is a solution to prevent RSI for computer users.
Recent legislation and court rulings have contributed to elevate awareness of ergonomic risk in business. We believe this will help our efforts to promote Handwriter as the ergonomic editing tool designed for increased productivity and comfort for computer users," said James Dao, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of CIC. Since August of 1996, CIC has promoted the Handwriter line of products to major corporations through Project Genesis, a comprehensive program designed to influence companies to adopt Handwriter to improve health, safety and productivity for their computer users. Project Genesis offers corporations on-site system analysis, Handwriter installation, technical support, user training, and productivity reviews. Since January 1997, the Handwriter has been sold through approximately 122 CompUSA retail stores throughout the United States.
