Microcom Introduces Pocket Carbon Copy for Handheld PCs
NORWOOD, Mass. — August 6, 1997 — Microcom, a wholly owned subsidiary of Compaq Computer Corp. (NYSE: CPQ), today introduced Pocket Carbon Copy(TM) for mobile professionals who require remote access from a handheld PC. Pocket Carbon Copy allows handheld PC users to access information from their desktop PC at any remote location. It provides the remote computing power for users to send and receive emails, update databases and access applications from the office PC. Through a dial-up connection, network managers may remotely monitor and control their NT servers. Mobile professionals can access crucial information from the office PC and corporate network while at home or on the road.
With an installed base of more than two million users, Carbon Copy is a family of remote control software products that enables users to communicate with any PC running Windows CE, Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 3.X and MS DOS operating systems.
Pocket Carbon Copy features several new screen navigation tools. Zoom automatically shrinks the desktop screen into the viewing area of a handheld PC, allowing users to move to a certain area of the screen instantly. CursorTrack(TM) automatically follows the blinking cursor throughout the area of the screen, while the speed panning feature quickly moves you across the remote screen. Another unique function is Jump to Start, which immediately brings the user to the start menu on the remote PC. The Disable Menu Bar removes the menu and command bars from the screen for maximum utilization of workspace. Pocket Carbon Copy also supports modem and serial connections, as well as TCP/IP connections via Microsoft Dial-Up Networking.
"With the introduction of Pocket Carbon Copy, Microcom once again demonstrates its market leadership and total commitment to meet the diverse and rapidly evolving needs of its customers," said Jeff Coveney, senior product marketing manager for Microcom. "Handheld PC users require fast access to information while on the road; it's crucial for conducting business. Pocket Carbon Copy is a vital tool for mobile professionals and network managers who need to stay connected to their business, from anywhere in the world."
Steve Drake, research analyst for International Data Corporation, said, "While Windows CE offers pocket versions of applications for its Windows desktop counterparts, remote control CE products, such as Microcom's Pocket Carbon Copy, provides sales people, executive travelers, and day extenders the ability to make the handheld as powerful as their corporate desktop."
