CHATSWORTH, Calif. — August 20, 1997 — Advanced Recognition Technologies Inc. (ART), a developer of technologically superior speech and handwriting recognition engines, and Design Technology Inc. (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Microspeed Inc.) the world's leading supplier of light pen technology, today announced their agreement to deliver new products to market that incorporate handwriting recognition software and light pen hardware.
The light pens will feature the handwriting recognition product that has gained prominent notoriety in the desktop, laptop and handheld PC markets.

Light pens deliver active and accurate interaction between the user and the system to provide a full range of mouse-like capabilities. The DTI lightpen technology enables handwriting interface with a PC by allowing the user to write directly on the monitor screen. The ART software can then transform the written input into document text.
ART's smARTwriter software for Windows 95/NT and Windows CE is a powerful, accurate software solution that allows users to enter handwritten data or words into popular applications such as Word(R), Excel(R) or any Windows 95 or NT application.
smARTwriter is unique for its "trainable" software engine that conforms the user's writing style, making recognition extremely accurate. The user can enter a letter, word, symbol or drawing anywhere on the screen or tablet.
DTI's light pens are available with unibody metal (stainless steel or anodized aluminum) cases with shielded cable (straight or coiled, optional armor cable is available), single, double or triple nosetip or barrel switches, zero-travel nosetips, and both internal ISA bus interfaces and external serial interfaces.
