CIC Announces Japanese Version of PenDOS
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. — May 26, 1992 — Communications Intelligence Corp. (CIC) announced the Japanese version of PenDOS, an operating environment for the pen-based computing market, which was successfully introduced by Justsystem Corp. and NCR/AT&T at last week's Tokyo Harumi Business Show.
The new PenDOS version was demonstrated with Justsystem's front end processor, ATOK, and is the result of a development agreement begun in December of 1991 between CIC and Justsystem.
Justsystem Corp. is Japan's leading applications software company.
Ichitaro, Justsystem's word processing software represents over 75 percent of the market; and ATOK, Justsystem's front end processor (a basic component of the Japanese computer system which converts kana characters to kanji) over 78 percent.
With this introduction, PenDOS becomes the first operating environment to support the rapid development of pencentric applications in Japan's growing computing market.
DOS applications already represent over 90 percent of the Japanese PC market.
Now, with Justsystem's ATOK, hardware manufacturers can deliver total pen computing solutions based on CIC's PenDOS and Japanese Handwriter Recognition Systems.
NCR Japan has already begun marketing their NCR 3125 Notepad computer with PenDOS through their direct sales channel.
According to NCR Japan and the marketing experience they have had over the last year, PenDOS has become the preferred pen operating environment in Japan.
PenDOS brings the benefits of pen computing to thousands of existing DOS applications and to millions of DOS users.
"PenDOS also makes the development of new pencentric applications efficient and easy" said James Dao, president and CEO of CIC.
"These benefits were reconfirmed at last week's show. We are pleased to offer PenDOS in Japan. PenDOS and ATOK make a complete solution which meets the specific needs of the Japanese market."
"Justsystem's kana kanji conversion system, ATOK, is used by about 80 percent of the 10 million Japanese personal computer units," added Kazunori Ukigawa, president of Justsystem Corp.
"In the present Japanese market, there is a strong demand for pen computing. CIC and Justsystem have jointly developed and demonstrated a new technology at the Business Show in Tokyo, and have earned a very high reputation."
"This joint effort (of the two companies) will greatly impact the Japanese computer market, which I am certain will bring success."
