CIC Enters Marketing and Technology Agreement with IBM
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. — September 29, 1992 — Communication Intelligence Corp. (CIC) (NASDAQ:CICI) Tuesday announced it has entered into a marketing and technological relationship with IBM.
Under this agreement:
— CIC grants IBM rights to exclusively resell and sublicense CIC's PenDOS and PenDOS compatible Handwriter Recognition Systems worldwide to both end-users and computer manufacturers.
— The two companies take a first step in a strategic joint relationship to advance pen computing technology.
CIC's PenDOS pen operating environment is specifically designed to transform existing mouse-aware DOS applications into pen-aware applications, without modification, and to develop new pencentric applications. Fast, memory efficient, and requiring little power and hard disk space, PenDOS can be implemented on all hardware that supports a DOS operating environment, including IBM Personal Computers.
PenDOS is localized for the languages of the major world markets including U.S., Western Europe and Japan. Combined with CIC's Handwriter Recognition Systems, which have been optimized for these key markets, PenDOS allows IBM to immediately offer its customers a proven pen computing solution, worldwide.
"PenDOS is an exciting addition to our pen computing product offerings," said Lee Reiswig, assistant general manager of Personal Systems Programming at IBM. "The ability of PenDOS to shorten the development time for creating pen-aware applications by using existing software is attractive to many of our customers interested in pen computing."
"CIC is pleased to establish this strategic relationship with IBM," said James Dao, CIC president and chief executive officer. "We believe that the emerging pen-based computing market will benefit strongly from the support of an industry leader like IBM."
CIC is a leading, worldwide supplier of pen computing products, including: multilingual (English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Japanese) Handwriter Recognition Systems and Handwriter Dynamic Signature Verification, and CIC's own PenDOS and MacHandwriter pen operating environments. CIC's MacHandwriter, a desktop pen extension to the Macintosh computer, is distributed by Apple Japan Inc. CIC is headquartered in Redwood Shores, and has a subsidiary in Tokyo.
