IBM Restructures Porting Workshops for OS/2; One-On-One Developer Assistance Offered

AUSTIN, Texas — March 22, 1994 — IBM Tuesday announced that it has restructured its Porting and Technical Consulting Workshops for the award winning OS/2 (a) operating system and pen computing to offer custom, one-on-one consulting services to software developers and MIS professionals. The individualized services are provided through a collaborative effort between IBM's Personal Software Products division and One Up Corp., which provides the workshops as part of IBM's Developer Assistance Program. The Custom Application Porting Workshops for IBM OS/2 replace the classroom-style group workshop IBM has offered for the past four years as part of the program.

The new series will help simplify the process of creating 32-bit OS/2 applications from their existing 16-bit OS/2, DOS, Windows (b), or UNIX applications, or creating pen-based applications, by giving developers individualized assistance from teams of technical experts. The workshops also offer developers help in areas such as utilizing OS/2's Systems Object Model, IBM Multimedia Presentation Manager/2 and in creating pen-based applications using PenDOS (b) from IBM.

"The new workshops will offer developers the help they need when they need it," said Dave Harrington, director of software development programs, IBM Personal Software Products division. "At the facility in Dallas, developers will be able to bring in their source code and work hand-in-hand with experts who have helped hundreds of companies port their applications to OS/2. With these resources at their disposal, developers can accomplish in just a few days work that might have taken months on their own.

Additionally, they will attain the knowledge necessary to complete the porting effort after returning from the workshop." According to Barry Litwin, executive vice president of development for Hummingbird Communications Ltd., "IBM's Porting and Technical Consulting Workshop provided valuable technical information that allowed us to accelerate the development of Hummingbird's eXceed/OS/2 display server software. We left the workshop with native OS/2 code, and soon afterward became the first third-party supplier to offer an X display server for the burgeoning OS/2 platform.

The exceptional quality and involvement of the staff really made the workshop a success." To schedule a workshop, or to receive more information, developers can contact One Up Corp. at 800/678-31UP. Outside the U.S. and Canada, please call 214/620-1123, or contact Marilyn Johnson of IBM at 407/982-5514. IBM's Personal Software Products division, headquartered in Austin, Texas, is an industry leader in the development of operating systems, including OS/2 and PC DOS, as well as networking software and other advanced technologies.
