Motorola Ships WaveGuide Wireless Software Toolkit to Developers

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — May 27, 1992 — In a move to foster the development of software that supports the burgeoning wireless communications industry, Motorola's Wireless Enterprises group announced Wednesday it is shipping the DOS version of its WaveGuide toolkit to independent software vendors (ISVs) nationwide.

Macintosh and Windows versions of the product are planned for release later this year.

WaveGuide is the first in a family of Motorola software products designed to bridge the gap between wireless communications and today's personal computing devices. The toolkit is a complete software and documentation package designed to meet the needs of the software development community.

WaveGuide's uniform environment allows software developers to concentrate on the application, not the dynamics of wireless communications technology. This design makes the development of new wireless applications and the adaption of existing applications to wireless communications much easier. WaveGuide currently supports the ARDIS public shared network and going forward will support multiple networks for both vertical and horizontal application development.

"Our society is changing from one grounded in the technology of the twentieth century to one unchained by the wireless era," said Susan B. Major, business strategy manager for Wireless Enterprises. "Applications such as electronic mail, time and calendar management, report writing, imaging and mapping systems, and automatic vehicle location are destined to become as integral to the mobile workplace as the fax machine was to the offices of the '80s."

"WaveGuide's flexibility and build-in efficiencies will play a significant role in bringing wireless applications to the masses."

WaveGuide encapsulates all real-time message routing, queuing and low-level communications functions associated with wireless data communications. This toolkit enables software developers to produce applications quickly and easily, and preserves existing investments in wireless communications software.

"Motorola is committed to making it simple for software developers to create wireless applications," said Dave Altounian, manager of business development for Wireless Enterprises. "WaveGuide is a software product that will make the wireless industry a reality."

According to the Gartner Group, Inc., the Stamford, Conn. computer industry research firm, the wireless communications market will increase from $11 billion in 1989 to more than $38 billion in 1995, and grow to represent 10 percent of the total telecommunications revenues.

"Today's business professionals are facing increased pressure to get close to their customer and transact business at the customer's site," said Major. "Marrying mobile data technology with computers that utilize WaveGuide-developed wireless applications will result in more productivity, increased flexibility for the worker and a greater competitive edge."
