ARDIS Signs Agreement to Distribute Motorola’s Wireless Communications Software

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — January 19, 1993 — Motorola Inc. announced Tuesday that ARDIS Co., located in Lincolnshire, Ill., has signed an agreement to distribute its wireless communications software.

For the first time, ARDIS business partners and customers will be able to use Motorola's WaveGuide 2.0 software development toolkit to quickly and easily add wireless capabilities to their new or existing applications. WaveGuide is the software communications link that brings together computing devices and wireless networks. ARDIS is one of the nation's leading wireless networks that transmits data using radio-packet technology.

According to Robert Euler, vice president of marketing at ARDIS, WaveGuide 2.0 will be a key component of the wireless communications service package offered to existing and prospective ARDIS customers.

"Software developers are looking for tools that will maximize their development investment in wireless technology," said Euler.

"WaveGuide's standard API allows developers to modify or develop wireless applications without having to worry about complex communication protocols, significantly reducing the application development cycle. With WaveGuide, existing customers can also easily migrate to new, emerging network protocols and modem interfaces, protecting their initial investment."

International Data Corp., a leading industry research firm, predicts there will be up to 20 million wireless data subscribers by the year 2000. The availability of software will be one of the key influencers responsible for this growth.

"As the wireless communications industry begins to mature, Motorola is committed to developing strategic partnerships and alliances that will bring wireless into the mainstream of data communications," said David Altounian, business development manager, Motorola Paging and Wireless Data Group. "Our joint agreement with ARDIS gives members of the application community direct access to the necessary software development tools to make wireless computing a reality."

WaveGuide 2.0 supports the ARDIS wireless network in either a DOS or Windows environment. With WaveGuide, software developers can easily design-in complex communications protocols for two-way data communications over ARDIS, a popular wireless network that transmits data using radio-packet technology. WaveGuide also supports ARDIS's planned network expansion at 19.2 Kbps, including nationwide automatic roaming.

The ARDIS network is a partnership of IBM and Motorola, and operates the first nationwide radio data information service enabling in-building and on-street communications between handheld terminals and host computers. Today, ARDIS has coverage in more than 400 of the major metropolitan service areas in more than 8,000 cities throughout the United States. ARDIS's customers include IBM Corp., NCR Corp., the City of New York and the Los Angeles Department of Transportation.

Motorola Inc. is one of the world's leading providers of wireless communications technologies, products and services. The company's proven leadership in RF technology and its expertise in microelectronics, data communications, computing and information management offers partners and customers a comprehensive range of solutions to enable a new generation of wireline and wireless voice, data, facsimile, image and video communications.
