Wireless E-mail Supplier RadioMail Raises $3 Million in Private Funding from Motorola & 2M Invest
MENLO PARK, Calif. — April 12, 1993 — RadioMail Corp., the leading provider of wireless electronic mail services, has raised $3 million in its initial round of outside private funding.
Supplying the capital are Motorola Inc., of Schaumburg, Ill., and 2M Invest, of Copenhagen, Denmark. Each of the two companies holds a minority share in RadioMail.
RadioMail, formed in 1988, provides wireless electronic mail and information services to subscribers via portable and palmtop computers, pagers, personal digital assistants, and other intelligent devices equipped with a radio modem.
RadioMail Chairman and Founder Geoffrey S. Goodfellow said, "With small computers and radio modems becoming truly affordable, the time is ripe for any mobile professional who carries a portable computing device to enjoy the convenience of wireless E-mail as a business tool. Motorola's track record in wireless communication technology products and services makes it an ideal investment partner for RadioMail. And 2M Invest, with its extensive global marketing experience, will provide an invaluable contribution as we expand our business beyond the U.S."
"Motorola's goal is to work in collaboration with a variety of companies to bring easy-to-use wireless communications to both vertical markets and the emerging 'mobile office professional' market," said Robert L. Growney, executive vice president of Motorola Inc., and general manager of the Paging and Wireless Data Group. "We see RadioMail as an enabling service which will help grow the wireless data communications market. We are therefore pleased to be an investor in this innovative company, and provide the funding which will help the firm flourish in its business mission."
RadioMail Corp. operates an information service bureau that provides E-mail and information to intelligent portable computing devices equipped with radio modems. Via an assigned Radio MailboxTM in RadioMail's computer center, subscribers can send and receive messages over a wide range of public and private networks, including corporate mail systems such as Lotus cc:Mail, public access systems such as MCI Mail, ATT Mail and CompuServe; and the worldwide Internet and UUCP/USENET service. RadioMail also has entered partnerships to provide service over the leading public two-way wireless networks, ARDIS and RAM Mobile Data.
Based in Menlo Park, Calif., RadioMail will relocate to San Mateo in May.
