Future of Wireless Data Networks is Subject of Interactive Satellite Program
FORT COLLINS, Colo. — May 11, 1994 — Frank Wapole, president and chief executive officer of ARDIS, will present a detailed analysis of wireless data networks, potential markets and systems as part of four live interactive satellite broadcasts addressing future communications developments.
Wapole's presentation will air Tuesday, May 17, from 4:05 p.m. to 5 p.m. (EDT) as part of a series presented by the National Technological University, a private non-profit institution serving the advanced educational needs of engineers, scientists and technical managers through a wide range of instructional courses.
Looking ahead to a market for wireless communications that is anticipated to reach 13.4 million mobile subscribers by the year 2000, Wapole will discuss the anticipated market breakdown, application profiles and available networks.
The market segmentation he anticipates will consist of:
— Field Service and Logistics: Blue collar event-driven occupations in the field.
— Corporation Applications Extension: Field-based white collar workers.
— Mobile Office: White collar professionals and managers who are occasionally mobile.
— Personal Communications and Organization: The consumer of information services.
Wapole's list of applications includes paging and dispatch, status message, database inquiry, file transfer, 2-way messaging, E-mail, vehicle location, broadcast and transaction processing, among others.
Users, he believes, will range from low-tech field technicians to business executives and professionals. Included will be such businesses as financial services, insurance, real estate, lawyers and accountants, and professionals in the health care field.
Wapole says the network designs and technologies will emphasize reliability and availability, target markets, applications and uses, user profiles, business objectives and competencies of technology.
The ultimate goal, he says, for business uses is to solve a problem, and for the consumer, to improve his life. For the network operator, the goal is to choose a market segment to profitably serve with a technology that is defensible over time.
Prior to joining ARDIS, headquartered in Lincolnshire, Ill., Wapole was corporate vice president and general manager for Worldwide Business Development for Motorola's Land Mobile Products Sector. He holds a master's degree in business administration from Loyola University and a bachelor of science degree from Christian Brothers University.
The wireless communication series, moderated by Michael Killen, president of Killen & Associates, includes Applications and Technology, to be aired May 17, and Product Opportunities and Design Considerations, to be aired May 24. Air times are the same on both dates: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time.
