Korea Mobile Telecom Selects Retix Products for First Asian CDPD Network Field Trials

SANTA MONICA, Calif. — August 2, 1994 — Retix (NASDAQ:RETX) Tuesday announced that Korea Mobile Telecom has selected Retix Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) products for its mobile data network field trial — the first of its kind outside of North America.

Korean Mobile Telecom (KMT), working with systems integrator, Dongjin, will use the Retix ROUTERXchange 7000 (RX 7000) MD-IS Router to provide the Mobile Data-Intermediate System (MD-IS) functions in Korea Mobile Telecom's CDPD trial network.

Retix has already taken a dominant position in the North American CDPD market, providing its RX7000 MD-IS Router and related CDPD Application Software to leading cellular service providers and integrators including McCaw Cellular, AirTouch (formerly PacTel Cellular), Motorola Wireless Data and Ericsson Radio Systems. The KMT network marks Retix's first entry into international CDPD network markets.

"The Korea Mobile Telecom network is an exciting opportunity for Retix," said Stephen Diamond, vice president marketing and service for Retix. "Clearly, CDPD is not only becoming the mobile data standard of choice in North America, but is gaining acceptance in important overseas markets like Asia. Our expertise in this market and leadership position in North America will allow us to penetrate these markets as they develop."

KMT is the largest cellular provider in Korea and provides service to over 500,000 cellular customers. KMT's research center evaluated a number of potential mobile data services including RAM Mobile Data, ARDIS and CDPD, and concluded that CDPD was the best option for its network. Working with Dongjin, a leading systems integrator in the Korean marketplace, KMT has begun implementing a trial CDPD network and has selected Retix to provide the MD-IS component of this network, which provides packet routing and control functions. Retix's RX 7000 MD-IS Router is an enhanced version of its RX 7000 multi-protocol router with CDPD-conformant protocols developed by Retix.

In addition to its initial purchase of the RX 7000 MD-IS Routers, KMT plans to utilize Retix's OSI-based CDPD Application Software for its network application and support services.

"We selected Retix because of the company's proven technology and expertise in CDPD," said Jung Soo Ma, managing director of Korea Mobile Telecom's Research Center. "Being first to market with mobile data services is important to us and our customers, and Retix's participation in our CDPD trial will help us to achieve this goal."

"Retix is the leader in providing CDPD solutions to cellular service providers and carriers in North America," said Kwang Do Jung, managing director of Dongjin, systems integrator for KMT's CDPD network. "They were a natural choice for providing the MD-IS solution for the KMT network."
