From Police Cruisers to Rental Cars to Ice Floes…; Second Annual Wireless Computing Awards Presented at WIRELESS DATACOMM

WASHINGTON, D.C. — December 8, 1994 — The second annual Wireless Computing Awards, which recognize end-users, VARS and manufacturers involved in the most innovative uses of wide-area and local-area mobile wireless computing applications, were presented today at the WIRELESS DATACOMM Exposition & Conference. Two applications tied for first place in the Wide-Area Wireless Computing category: The Town of Groton, Conn. Police Department, Bell Atlantic Mobile and the Software Corporation of America won for their solution which involved one of the first commercial CDPD applications in the country. Avis Rent-a-Car and ARDIS won for the "Wizard On Wheels" (WOW) wireless data communications system which saves Avis' customers time by providing comprehensive rental information on Preferred Customers to shuttle buses in transit.

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, NCR, Solectek and Telesystems won in the Local-Area Wireless Computing category for the Woods Hole Barents Sea Shallow Water Tomography Project. This project used wireless LAN technology to track information such as "ice crack" data and perform other studies of the polar front by tracking the frequency of sound pulses. "These applications exemplify the diversity of wireless data business solutions," said Paul M. Muir, president, WIRELESS DATACOMM Inc.

"They all demonstrate how wireless technology enables you to obtain information anywhere, anytime — from your local police cruiser, to your rental car, to the open ocean. WIRELESS DATACOMM is produced by Communications Events Inc., and is sponsored by BUSINESS COMMUNICATIONS REVIEW and the RED HERRING Magazines, and the National Association of Business & Educational Radio (NABER), BIS Strategic Decisions and the Personal Communications Industry Association (PCIA).

It is also endorsed by Mobile OFFICE magazine. WIRELESS DATACOMM Spring '95 will be held in San Jose, Calif. from May 16-18.
