Because PCMCIA cards for one computer system are often incompatible with slots or cards from other systems, computer users can’t always use their memory cards interchangeably between desktop and mobile systems. Addressing this problem, Datalight has developed a memory card file manager called “CardTrick” that OEMs can install on computers so that users can read from or write to cards formatted on different systems.

Using the CardTrick software development kit (SDK), OEMs can install the CardTrick file manager on 80×86-based systems as a device driver, TSR, or BIOS extension. CardTrick, which is PCMCIA 2.0-compliant, includes a FAT-style Flash file system that lets the computer treat Flash memory as a disk drive, meaning applications and utilities can be used with the file manager without adaptation. The Flash memory can even be configured to appear as a write-protected SRAM card for readability on non-Flash file systems.
