Developers and other interested parties expressed strong support for the Newton platform as evidenced by the number of participants at Apple’s recent Newton Platform Development Conference.

The conference, held on December 7-8 at the Santa Clara Convention Center, featured a three track program. Attendees could select from beginner and advanced Newton development, along with international marketing for PDA platforms.

Apple used the forum to announce the formation of the Newton Industry Association, which is chartered to promote the growth and compatibility of devices using Newton technology.

The original members of the association represent licensees and marketing partners including Alcatel, ARM, BellSouth MobileComm, British Telecom/Cellnet, Cirrus Logic, Deutsche Telecom, GEC Plessey, LSI Logic, Matsushita, Motorola, ParaGraph, Scriptel, Sharp, Siemens/ROLM, Telia, Toshiba, Travelling Software, and US West.

Apple also used the opportunity to announce that it has shipped more than 2,000 Newton Toolkits around the world. In addition, the current count for shipping third party and in-house corporate applications stands at over a dozen, with more than forty companies promising more to come in the near future.
