PI Systems Intros New Version of Infolio; Makes Deals in Health Care

Pi Systems is an example of a pen-based manufacturer that has targeted a vertical market — the health care industry — and appears to be having some success. Pi recently closed a deal involving the sale of 2500 Infolio units to several health care services and hospitals, including the Montefiore Hospital and Clinic of Bronx, New York, and Keystone Health Care and Outreach Health Services, both based in Texas. These contracts were the result of an on-going business relationship with Care Management Systems, a value-added reseller based in Austin, Texas.

In other developments, Pi has introduced an upgraded version of its Infolio called the Infolio 160, which Pi claims is 30% faster than the original model. The new version now has 4 Mbytes of onboard RAM as well as PCMCIA Type II card support and transflective backlighting with the same battery life as the original model. The Infolio 160 sells for $2249.

Finally, Pi’s software development environment for Infolio has been renamed MobileWare Client and MobileWare Server. The server portion runs on Sun SPARCstations and on 386/486 platforms. A complete SPARCstation development system is available through Pi Systems. The MobileWare SDK is available separately for $1095.

We’ve always been impressed with the focus and quality of PI Systems’ products. They’re showing no signs of veering from their purpose — to establish themselves in one market and then gradually move to others.
