Voting IBM and BellSouth’s Simon “smart” cellular phone “Best of Show” by Byte Magazine at COMDEX last fall may have been a bit premature (see the December 1993 issue of PBC for more information about the Simon).

On March 28, 1994, IBM revealed that it will postpone the shipment of the Simon due to unnamed technical problems in integrating the cellular faxing features with the handheld device. These problems were apparently discovered during IBM’s quality assurance tests that were conducted early in the manufacturing process.

IBM’s decision is probably sound since the mobile computing market is very critical of faulty products. IBM and BellSouth still have a healthy window of opportunity in which to get a solid product out.
