Every time a new computing platform emerges, a set of utilities to make the device even more useful is quick to follow. Many frequently appear as shareware—as was the case with the Newton—followed by commercial versions.

StarCore, Apple Computer’s software publishing and distribution group, has announced a set of applications for the Newton that promises to maximize the usable memory on the device, while adding time-saving features. The package, dubbed Newton Utilities, comprises of four customizable applications that work with the entire Newton family of PDAs, including the new Motorola Marco.

The applications include:

  • Shortcuts, a floating on-screen palette to which you can drag icons representing the most used features, such as preferences and keyboards, for quick, one-tap access.
  • Memory Manager, enables users to clear out-dated items and entries from the system’s internal memory.
  • Software Manager, a single user interface for downloading, removing, selecting and archiving applications.
  • Scrapbook, similar to the Macintosh scrapbook feature.

The Newton Utilities carry an Apple price of $49.99 and is available on Windows and Macintosh diskettes.

StarCore also announced the Newton Enhancement Pack featuring three applications on a single 2 MB flash storage card. These applications are: Palm Computing’s Graffiti, Newton Utilities, and Action Names. The Newton Enhancement Pack has an Apple price of $149.
