ART Enhances Windows CE Recognizer

Trims Program Size and Adds Features

Advanced Recognition Technologies (ART) has enhanced their smARTwriter for Windows CE product by including support for European character sets, and reducing the amount of memory required to operate. Marketed worldwide by multiple vendors, the need for supporting such characters on Windows CE is obvious.

smARTwriter adds handwriting recognition to the emerging Windows CE platform, enabling users to perform operations such as launching applications and, more to the point, entering text into programs such as Pocket Word. One feature that makes smARTwriter easy to use is its ability to recognize characters written anywhere on the screen. The resulting text is then positioned in the appropriate place automatically. This means that it should be possible to use a Windows CE handheld PC without having to concentrate on the screen.

As with several other recognition packages (available on other platforms), smARTwriter learns to recognize your hand printing following a few minutes of initial instruction. The system also learns each time you make a correction, allowing you to increase the accuracy of the system as you use it.

Two add-on packages are also available from ART. smARTwriter PLUS offers a feature the company calls single stroke characters, requiring the user to learn a predefined set of characters which can later be modified. The second package, smARTscribble, acts as a sketch and jot pad. smARTwriter will be available for $49.95. The PLUS package, which includes smARTwriter and other add-ons, will retail for $69.95.
