CIC Announces Worldwide Release of PenDOS 2.0

July 14, 1992 — Communication Intelligence Corp. (NASDAQ:CICI) announced Tuesday the release of PenDOS 2.0 for the U.S., European, and Japanese markets.

The first pen operating environment to be localized and released to serve all of these major markets, PenDOS 2.0 is the new version of CIC’s fast and memory-efficient pen operating environment for the DOS platform. The PenDOS 2.0 release was announced at Technologic Partners’ Mobile 92 Conference.

For mobile computers to be effective, they must be small and efficient in terms of weight, size and power consumption; and they must be economically priced. The pencentric applications for mobile computers must be easy to develop and easy to use; and also efficient on memory and power consumption. The applications must be able to be easily integrated into the desktop-based office system.

CIC’s PenDOS is ideally suited for this emerging mobile computing market, as DOS currently has over 62 percent market share of the horizontal applications and over 80 percent of the vertical applications used worldwide. PenDOS also allows developers to quickly create new pencentric applications. Additionally, PenDOS can run the thousands of DOS applications and utilities already on the market.

One of the most exciting aspects of the 2.0 release is its localization for the Japanese market, the world’s fastest grow-ing computer market, where CIC’s PenDOS 2.0 is well-positioned to gain major market share. In Japan, NCR has al-ready begun marketing PenDOS on the NCR 3125 NotePad computer. Additionally, CIC’s recent licensing agreement grants NEC, with 55 percent of the Japanese PC market, rights to use CIC’s open-architected, pen computing software technology.

PenDOS 2.0 combined with new versions of CIC’s core technologies — Handwriter Recognition Systems and Hand-writer Dynamic Signature Verification — is expected to ship Fall of ’92. This combination will provide mobile computer users a proven, consumer-ready handwriting recognizer and robust computer security system.

CIC is headquartered in Redwood Shores, and has a subsidiary in Tokyo. CIC is a leading, worldwide supplier of pen computing products, including: multilingual (English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Japanese) Handwriter Recognition Systems and Handwriter Dynamic Signature Verification, with interfaces for Microsoft Windows for Pen Computing, GO’s PenPoint, and CIC’s own PenDOS and MacHandwriter pen operating environments. CIC’s Ma-cHandwriter, a desktop pen extension to the Macintosh computer, is distributed by Apple Japan Inc.
