CIC Expands Distribution Channel in Japan for its MacHandwriter Product

August 24, 1993 — (NASDAQ/NMS:CICI) Communication Intelligence Corp. (CIC) Tuesday announced that it has expanded distribution of its MacHandwriter, desktop pen extension product for the Japanese Macintosh computer market.

Apple Japan, formerly CIC’s executive distributor of the MacHandwriter II product, will continue to sell MacHandwrit-er II through its network of authorized dealers, on a non-exclusive basis.

CIC has also signed two additional distributors, Catena and Shimadzu Rika. Catena, one of Japan’s largest Macintosh distributors, also distributes other personal computers and develops and distributes business and educational applications software for the Japanese personal computer market. Shimadzu Rika is a leading personal computer distributor for the Japanese educational market. Both distributors have placed initial orders for the MacHandwriter II product.

“The Japanese market continues to represent significant opportunity for CIC,” stated James Dao, CIC president and chief executive officer. “Our handwriting recognition and operating environment software is market proven, as evidenced by the licensing of our technology to Japan’s leading manufacturers of DOS- based personal computers, including NEC, IBM, Fujitsu, NCR/AT&T, Seiko Epson, and others. These companies’ collective PC market share exceeds 80% of the Japanese personal computer market. And they are now beginning to ship portable pen computers, making pen computing a reality in Japan.”

“CIC’s MacHandwriter II product, which brings pen computing to Macintosh users, has received favorable reviews from Japanese users,” said Dao. “Now, in keeping with our strategy to expand distribution of the MacHandwriter II, we have signed on two new distributors. CIC will continue to pursue additional distributors, including those involved in the educational market.”

MacHandwriter II, CIC’s pen-based user interface for the Macintosh personal computer, was introduced in Japan in March, 1993. MacHandwriter II allows direct handwritten input of Japanese characters (kanji, hiragana, katakana), alphanumerics, and symbols into the computer using a tablet and pen. Users are able to communicate with their Macintosh simply and naturally by pointing, writing, and drawing with the pen. MacHandwriter is compatible with any Macintosh application written for KanjiTalk.

Communication Intelligence Corp. (CIC) develops, markets, and licenses natural input computer technology-products that use pen and image for input. Founded in 1981, CIC today is a leading supplier of pen computing products throughout the world, particularly its multilingual Handwriter Dynamic Signature Verification software, and PenDOS and PenMac pen operating environments.

CIC’s products allow existing and new pen applications to operate on all major hardware and operating system plat-forms, including: Microsoft Windows for Pen Computing, GO’s PenPoint, and CIC’s own PenDOS and PenMac. CIC’s PenDOS and Handwriter Recognition System for PenDOS are distributed and exclusively sublicensed by IBM to pen computer manufacturers worldwide. CIC’s MacHandwriter, a desktop pen extension to the Macintosh computer, is distributed by Apple Japan and other leading personal computer distributors.
