CIC’s Handwriter Recognition System Software and PenDOS Shipping on IBM’s ThinkPad 710T

April 5, 1993 — Communication Intelligence Corp. (CIC) (NASDAQ:CICI) Monday announced that its award-winning, multilingual Handwriter Recognition System software and PenDOS pen operating environment are now available worldwide on IBM’s newly announced ThinkPad 710T.

The ThinkPad 710T, IBM’s second generation pen-based tablet computer, can be ordered through IBM Direct preloaded with CIC’s PenDOS and Handwriter Recognition System.

“On an industry-wide basis, pen-computing sales have not taken off because of three factors: lack of compelling applications, disappointing handwriting recognition and limited communications capabilities,” said Bruce Claflin, general manager, Mobile Computing, IBM Personal Computing Co. “These problems are addressed in our second generation tablet computer – the ThinkPad 710T, and through expanded pen market development programs.”

According to James Dao, president and chief executive officer of CIC, “Superior handwriting recognition is key to the ultimate success of pen computing. Now licensed by the world’s leading hardware manufacturers, CIC’s Handwriter Recognition System software is clearly consumer proven. We are pleased that IBM is committed to the success of the pen computing market, and that it offers CIC’s PenDOS and Handwriter Recognition System software for the ThinkPad 710T.”

CIC’s PenDOS pen operating environment is specifically designed to quickly transform existing mouse-aware DOS applications into pen-aware applications, without modification, and develop new pencentric applications. Fast, memory efficient, and requiring little power and hard disk space, PenDOS can be implemented on all hardware that supports a DOS operating environment, including IBM’s ThinkPad 710T.

PenDOS is localized for the languages of the major world markets including U.S., Western Europe, and Japan. Combined with CIC’s Handwriter Recognition System, which recognizes handwritten input and has been optimized for these key markets, PenDOS allows IBM to immediately offer its customers a proven pen computing solution, world-wide.

The IBM Personal Software Products Division distributes and exclusively sublicenses CIC’s PenDOS and Handwriter Recognition System for PenDOS to other pen hardware manufacturers worldwide.
