Dauphin to Bundle, Resell, Award-Winning PenCell Spreadsheet with 5000 Convertible Pentop and DTR-1

January 26, 1993 — Dauphin Technology Inc. and PenWare Inc. Tuesday announced an agreement to bundle a reduced version of PenWare’s award-winning PenCell spreadsheet with Dauphin’s 5000 Convertible Pentop and newly announced DTR-1.

Dauphin will also resell the full version of the PenCell spreadsheet under Windows for Pen Computing to its customers.

“The Dauphin 5000 and DTR-1 are designed and priced to meet the needs of today’s mobile professionals, giving them a fully functional notebook in addition to pen input and making the PenCell spreadsheet a very attractive application,” said Alan Yong, Dauphin president and CEO. The DTR-1 also announced today offers users a 486 pen computer solution in a 2.2 lb. package with a mini-keyboard, a 6 inch backlit VGA (640 x 480) display, full complement of standard I/O ports, and built-in communications capacities such as an internal ethernet adapter and internal fax/modem. “We’ve incorporated the power and capabilities of a desktop computer into a system you can literally hold in your hand,” stated Alan Yong. Dauphin’s DTR-1 offers a new hardware category and provides instant productivity when used with the PenCell spreadsheet.

PenCell has been widely acclaimed for its features designed for mobile pen computer users, and for its ability to directly improve the productivity of mobile users. “PenCell is an excellent fit with the market focus for our mobile computer product line,” said Alan Yong. “The agreement provides Dauphin customers with the ability to instantly demonstrate for themselves the value of the pen, with a familiar and widely used business application.”

“We are looking forward to working with Dauphin to broaden the market and deliver the benefits of pen computing to horizontal and vertical market users alike,” said Faruq Ahmad, vice president of marketing at PenWare. “The Dauphin 5000 and DTR Series reflect the kind of product advancement that will grow the market and deliver on the promise of mobile pen computing. We look forward to close and effective teamwork.”

Customers can purchase the full version of PenCell directly from Dauphin. The full version of PenCell ships with dozens of templates, enabling the user to create budgets, expense reports, and loan analyses with just a few strokes of the pen to modify appropriate templates. Alternatively, users can simply use spreadsheet files developed with common desktop spreadsheet programs.

Dauphin Technology Inc., headquartered in Lombard, Ill., designs, engineers and manufactures laptop, notebook and pen-based computers. Founded in 1988, the company has focused on establishing itself as a premier player in mobile computer technology. Publicly traded on the OTC pink sheets, symbol DNTK, Dauphin will sell its products through distributors and OEM’s as well as direct to large volume accounts. The Dauphin line of pen computers includes the Dauphin DTR-1, 5000-Color (the first color pen computer), and the pioneering Dauphin 5000 convertible pentop. Additionally, Dauphin will incorporate its recently announced DynaDrive, a one-ounce, 2.5″, 85 MB removable personal data cartridge (PDC) into its computer products.

PenWare has been in software development since 1983, and is a leading application developer in the area of mobile pen computing, located in Palo Alto, Calif. PenWare applications are designed to be portable, compact, extensible, and easy to internationalize. PenWare’s first product is the PenCell spreadsheet, which is focused on harnessing the power of the pen to make typical spreadsheet usage easy, with pen gestures, direct entry of data into cells, and the first ever unlimited undo capability in a spreadsheet. When first introduced at Comdex/Fall ’91, PenCell was selected finalist for the Best of Comdex awards in the entire category of applications software, from over 2000 entries.

PenCell has been designed to include features mobile spreadsheet users request most often. Spreadsheets are generally small, and users enter and present data, run scenarios, or do simple budgets and forecasts. Studies show that the vast majority of spreadsheet users limit feature use to a subset of basic options available with large desktop spreadsheets. This is the market for mobile pen computing, and for PenCell, rather than the “power user” for whom the desktop computer will continue to be important.
