EO Inc. Announces Agreement for Telescript; New Technology Promises Intelligent Messaging for Personal Communicators

February 8, 1993 — EO Inc. Monday announced an agreement with General Magic to implement General Magic’s Telescript technology on PenPoint-based personal communicators.

Telescript is a powerful new programming language for intelligent messaging and communications.

Telescript technology introduces three breakthroughs in personal communications. First, intelligent messaging enables personalized information retrieval and new applications such as automated appointment scheduling. Second, rich messaging enables content such as graphics, sound and animation. Third, Telescript-based devices from various vendors can exchange these intelligent, rich messages transparently. These unprecedented capabilities are implemented through active messages that will execute on AT&Ts new Telescript-based network.

“EO personal communicators allow mobile professionals to stay in touch anywhere and anytime,” said Alain Rossmann, president and chief executive officer of EO.

“Telescript is an important technology that will allow our current and future customers to take advantage of emerging messaging and information services. We believe that the combination of PenPoint and the AT&T Hobbit processor is the ideal platform upon which to build such communications-rich solutions.”

EO will release Telescript-based software products on EO personal communicators as soon as the new AT&T Tele-script-based network and information services are commercially available. These capabilities will be offered with new EO devices and made available to current EO customers through a software upgrade. EO will offer its Telescript implementation to other PenPoint hardware vendors in cooperation with GO Corp., the developer of the PenPoint operating system.

“EO has been an active participant in resolving interplatform content issues related to Telescript,” said Marc Porat, co-founder and chief executive officer of General Magic. “Our working relationship with EO has resulted in a superior solution that enables cooperation and smoother communications among different operating systems.”

EO Inc., founded in 1991, designs, builds and markets personal communicators: a new class of products which will revolutionize person-to-person communications. An integral part of EO’s strategy is its complete systems approach that includes both hardware and software.

EO’s strategic partners include AT&T, Matsushita and Marubeni, who contribute technical and manufacturing expertise as well as funding. In addition, Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, a Palo Alto-based venture capital firm, is an investor in the privately held corporation. EO is headquartered in Mountain View and has a European office in Cam-bridge, England.
