Fujitsu Personal Systems Inc. and GO Corp. Announce Marketing Partnership

June 21, 1993 — Fujitsu Personal Systems Inc. and GO Corp. jointly announced Monday a partnership designed to help value added resellers (VARs) and system integrators to quickly and efficiently address the mobile computing requirements of vertical markets.

The marketing partnership between Fujitsu and GO is intended to expand today’s advanced mobile computing technology into vertical markets by bringing together a suite of products and resources from multiple vendors.

The first implementation of this partnership — called the Developers Dream Kit — addresses the pen computing application sector of the mobile computing market by integrating the 325Point pen-tablet from Fujitsu, and pen software from GO, Slate Corp. and PenMagic.

“The development of pen applications based on the PenPoint operating system requires a commitment to integrating disparate technologies from a multitude of vendors,” said Lou Panetta, executive vice president, Fujitsu Personal Systems Inc.

“Based on our extensive work with vertical market resellers and system integrators, we believe that partnerships like this are essential to the development of robust pen-based business applications. Fujitsu’s marketing relationships with these and other companies is an example of our commitment to expanding pen technology into new markets.”

Beginning July 1, Fujitsu Personal Systems, GO and PenMagic will offer the Developers Dream Kit. The kit allows developers to easily enter the mobile computing market and provides more experienced pen application developers with the ability to efficiently develop a broad spectrum of advanced pen applications.

The kit includes the Fujitsu 325Point pen-based tablet with keyboard and 8 MB RAM (upgradeable to 12 MB), and GO’s PenPoint Operating System pre-loaded on a 1.8 inch 42 MB hard-disk drive. The development software includes Pen Magic’s Numero 2.0 and the Preview version of Slate’s PenApps. The kit is configured to provide developers with the flexibility to build applications in both PenApps and Numero.

GO will also provide a customizable form to VARs who purchase the Developers Dream Kit. With this customizable service, a VAR simply faxes a handwritten form to GO, and GO will return a form-based application developed in PenMagic’s Numero 2.0.

“Fujitsu Personal Systems’ focused approach will help vertically oriented VARs and system integrators quickly develop PenPoint-based applications,” said Bill Campbell, president, GO Corp. “We believe that this kit has the potential to significantly expand the pen market.”

The hardware in each developer kit is the Fujitsu 325Point, a 3 pound tablet-sized pen-based system designed for mo-bile workers who are involved in decision support activities. It can operate for up to 8 hours with a rechargeable NiCad or NiMH battery under an advanced power management system.

The 325Point is powered by a 25-MHz AMD 386SXLV CPU. Its RAM is expandable to 12 MB and has two Type I/II/III PCMCIA version 2.0 slots. The computer has a 9.4 inch (diagonal) transflective LCD display with VGA sup-port at 640×480 resolution. It is designed to be easily adapted for use with various peripherals such as printers, wireless communication devices, and cradles for vehicle mounting.

GO Corp.’s PenPoint is a powerful operating system for mobile pen computing. Designed for people on the go, Pen-Point offers unique features unavailable on other operating systems, including an easy-to-use interface based on familiar pen and paper concepts, an architecture designed for meeting the challenges of mobile connectivity, and advanced operating system capabilities that support rich applications. GO Corp., a privately held company headquartered in Foster City, Calif., develops, markets and supports PenPoint, a pen operating system, and applications designed for mobile users worldwide.

PenMagic Numero is a financial work processor software product that enables developers to quickly create customized numeric forms and applications. Numero 2.0 includes a powerful new visual scripting component called MagicScript for automating and sequencing work without programming. PenMagic Software Inc. is based in North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Slate Corp.’s Preview version of the PenApps Application Builder development tool is used to create form-based and data-intensive applications for pen-based computer platforms. It is an integrated package that includes a screen/forms designer, a built-in database and the Slate PenBasic programming language. Slate, headquartered in Scottsdale, Ariz., is the leading provider of pen-centric application software.

The Developers Dream Kit is priced at $3,150. The kit will be available July 1 through Sept. 30 from Fujitsu, GO and PenMagic. The Developer Dream Kit can be ordered from Fujitsu Personal Systems by calling 408/764-9310.
