Fujitsu Personal Systems Introduces New Pen-Based System for Decision Support

January 18, 1993 — Fujitsu Personal Systems Inc. Monday introduced the Fujitsu 325Point, a net tablet-size pen-based system for deci-sion support applications that continues to lead the mobile computing market in light weight and power management.

“In the evolving market for portable computers, there is a continual effort to achieve greater and greater levels of small size, light weight, long battery life and overall portability,” said Lou Panetta, executive vice president of marketing and North American sales, Fujitsu Personal Systems.

“As one of the original players in this market, we have made several breakthroughs in these key areas. Today, with the introduction of the first offering in our new product line, we are demonstrating our ability to continue to set market standards for portability.”

Weighing three pounds, the Fujitsu 325Point is designed for mobile workers who are involved in decision support activities in a wide range of vertical markets, including consumer packaged goods, utilities, pharmaceuticals, transportation and health care. These non-office workers require products that are extremely easy to use, small enough to carry and use anywhere, and capable of running for at least a full work shift without changing batteries.

The Fujitsu 325Point is a three-pound, tablet-size, pen-based computer. It measures 8.7 inches x 11.7 inches x 1.2 inches, and can operate for up to eight hours with a rechargeable NiCad or NiMH battery under an advanced power management system.

The Fujitsu 325Point is based on the AM386SXLV microprocessor and operates at 25 MHz. It offers 4MB RAM (upgradeable to 8MB or 12MB), a choice of solid-state disk or 1.8-inch hard disk card and two Type I/II/III PCMCIA ver-sion 2.0 slots.

The computer has a 9.4 inch (diagonal) transflective liquid crystal display with VGA support at 640 x 480 resolution. The 325Point’s interface ports are: built-in point-to-point serial infrared link, RS232 serial and parallel ports, a key-board and floppy disk drive.

The 325Point is easily adapted for use with various peripheral devices such as printers, wireless communications capabilities for real-time data transfer and cradles for vehicle mounting in mobile computing applications.

The Fujitsu 325Point will support multiple pen operating systems including Windows for Pen Computing by Microsoft, PenDOS by CIC and PenPoint by GO Corp.

In addition to these operating systems, Fujitsu Personal Systems will also be supporting development environments by Slate Corp. (PenApps) GRiD Systems (PenRight! Pro), PenPal Associates (Power PenPal), and R2Z (padBase).

“With its focused marketing strategy and new product lines, Fujitsu Personal Systems is ideally positioned to service the VAR channel with pen computing products and support. Slate is excited to be a strategic partner to Fujitsu, and to provide critical development tools and horizontal productivity applications for its line of pen-based platforms.

“Fujitsu Personal Systems will be a significant force in the evolution of pen-based computing,” said Vern Raburn, chairman of Slate Corp.

The preliminary price for the 325Point is $2,295. The product will be initially available in March 1993 only in North America. It is sold through Fujitsu Personal Systems Partners, including systems integrators, VARs and OEMs.
