GO Corporation Sees Pen Computing Market Emerge with NCR Announcement of Pen Hardware Platform

June 24, 1991 — GO Corp. Monday demonstrated its pen operating system, PenPoint, on NCR’s 3125 Notepad computer, the first announced Intel 386-based pen hardware platform.

The 3125 platform, in combination with PenPoint, provides a new business tool for mobile professionals.

”When we conceived the idea of PenPoint over four years ago, we envisioned a compact, powerful, portable computer more like pen and paper than a traditional laptop,” said S. Jerrold Kaplan, chairman of GO. ”We recognized that this new class of computer required a fresh software approach to realize its true potential.”

”It is very exciting to see this dream become a reality with the introduction of the NCR 3125 Notepad computers,” Kaplan continued. ”The 3125’s portability, together with PenPoint’s simplicity, creates a unique and powerful new business tool. Customers are recognizing the potential of this particular combination.”

PenPoint is a compact, 32-bit, object-oriented, multitasking operating system designed expressly for mobile, pen computers.  PenPoint introduces a number of innovations, including a Notebook User Interface (NUI), and an Embedded Document Architecture (EDA).

These features make the sytem easier to learn and use, increasing user productivity and reducing the training and support burden.  Applications can easily exchange files with other systems, ensuring seamless integration with existing computers and networks.

PenPoint has attracted the creative energies of the software development community, much as the Apple Macintosh did in the early 1980s. A wide variety of job-specific and general-purpose applications are under development for PenPoint computers. For instance, these ”pen-centric” applications will be used to fill out electronic ”smart” forms in the field, send and receive faxes and electronic mail, mark up document, take handwritten notes and create graphics and presentations directly with a pen.
